Samugheo is in the province of Oristano on the west coast of Sardinia, 47 Km from the provincial capital. It covers an area of 80 sq. Km at the centre of an region known in antiquity as "Brabaxianna" which presents many elements of interest in its flora, fauna, rock formations and caves. The area is dense in gorges and rock faces inhabited by boars, foxes, hares and rabbits, where the green of the lush vegetation contrasts sharply with the white chalk rocks, and the water courses are still rich in trout, eels and tench. Samugheo also offers archaeological exhibits and other sites worthy of note, from the 'domus de janus' to the 'nuraghe', from the remains of Carthaginian fortifications to findings from the republican and imperial periods and the charming, legendary 'Castello di Medusa', a stronghold built in a strategic position to keep out unwelcome visitors which today is a popular spot for walks and nature paths.
The town stands 375 m above sea-level and is noted for its winding roads and numerous rural parish churches, a sign of the popular piety still found today in the determination with which the inhabitants jealously protect their local traditions, be they the celebration of ancient religious ceremonies, the preservation of social identity or the maintenance of cultural traditions. |
